This is a difficult question to answer. Although typically a male dog is slightly larger and stronger than a female, there are many examples of female German Shepherd dogs that are stronger than some male dogs. Therefore, this is more a personal decision of the owner than an imperative. For example, if the dog will be a working dog for the police, I prefer a male dog. If the dog is for the family, I think females are easier to manage, they are also generally calmer and more gentle than male dogs. The female dogs are more interested in every member of the family, while the male dog goes to the stronger family member. Females maybe easier to live with, they may not require such a strong hand and as much training. Male dogs are larger and more powerful, and, because of their size, are more to manage. Male dogs are more independent and easier to distract. Keep in mind that there are exceptions to these general considerations; all dogs are individuals.
